Metformin
Metformin is a drug used to lower blood sugar levels in people with non-insulin-dependent (type 2) diabetes.
- Take extra vitamin B12 and folic acid, as they may help you side-step potential side effects This drug may deplete vitamin B12 and folic acid, which can lead to anaemia and high homocysteine levels. Taking 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 and 400 mcg of folic acid (folate) daily may prevent these effects.
- Take calcium to reduce a potential side-effect risk 800 to 1,000 mg daily of calcium with this medication may reduce the likelihood and/or severity of a potential side effect.
- Use guar gum while taking metformin Avoid guar gum when taking this medication since the supplement may decrease the medication’s absorption and/or activity in your body.
- Use ginkgo products when taking metformin Stay away from the herb Ginkgo biloba when taking this medication to avoid potential problems with glucose tolerance.
