Amoxicillin is a member of the penicillin family of antibiotics. Amoxicillin is used to treat bacterial infections, including infections of the middle ear. The combination of amoxicillin/clavulanate (Augmentin) is an extended-spectrum anti-biotic used to treat bacterial infections resistant to amoxicillin alone.
