Scientific Research
Research conducted at the University of Sheffield and published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that the efficacy of using oral (or ‘sublingual’) vitamin D sprays was equal to that of encapsulated vitamin D3. The researchers concluded that ‘A sublingual vitamin D spray is an effective mode of delivery for supplementation in a healthy population.’
Further research has indicated that the absorption of oral D3 sprays may in fact be superior to that of capsules. An in vitro trial by Cardiff University tested the delivery efficacy of BetterYou’s DLux3000 vitamin D3 oral spray through the inside of the mouth. Absorption was then monitored after a 12-hour period. Researchers found that absorption within the mouth was far superior to the traditional digestive route of tablets and capsules. Dr Charles Heard, who lead the Cardiff University absorption trial, explains: “The ultra-fast uptake is due to the very absorbent tissue within the mouth and the close proximity of a rich vein network.”
A study published in the Nutrition Journal found that Vitamin D3 absorption via oral sprays is up to 2.6 times higher compared to soft gelatin capsules. Significantly, researchers noted that absorption was not just higher in healthy subjects, but also in patients with intestinal malabsorption problems.
